Cosmetic surgery is an elective procedure performed by a surgeon to reshape normal structures in the body in order to improve appearance. It is often called plastic surgery and concerns itself with procedures such as facelifts, hair replacements, facial implants of the lips & cheeks, liposuction, nose jobs, tummy tucks, and breast augmentation. These surgeries are performed primarily to preserve or improve the patient's appearance rather than to restore the anatomy and/or functions of the body that are lost or impaired due to an illness or injury.

As celebrities and the wealthy began opting for more cosmetic surgery procedures over time it has become accepted and even encouraged in some circles. Today there is open acceptance of cosmetic surgery to the point that there are even television reality shows about it.

If you are interested in a cosmetic procedure it is important to consider the cosmetic surgery risks and remember that it is still a surgery like any other. Not all procedures come out exactly the way the surgeon or patient expected and each surgery is accompanied with a recovery period their own risks and discomfort. Patients need to select their cosmetic surgeon wisely and with care, obtain several references, and keep realistic expectations for their procedure.
